Alumni Volunteers of Alpha Phi Omega Strengthen Community Spirit at 2025 Calgary Police Classic By: Michelle Thiessen Calgary, AB — On Saturday, September 20, 2025, active members of Alpha Phi Omega Alumni Association of Calgary or APO AA Calgary stepped forward to serve as Station Aid 1, playing a key role in keeping the event safe, energized and welcoming. This is a new initiative spearheaded by Michelle Thiessen who also acted the team captain for the group. Service in Action The Calgary Police Classic marked its 45th year and introduced a new 8-km race, a kids’ race, and a fast road-course beginning and ending at Cowboys Park. At Station Aid 1, the APO AA Calgary brethen showed up and and handed out water, assisted at the aid-station table, offered encouragement to passing runners and supported the logistics of the route. Their contribution complemented the broader efforts of organizers Run Calgary and the Calgary Police Service in delivering a high-energy, community-layered event. Service. Leadership. Friendship. Alpha Phi Omega’s mission emphasizes leadership, friendship and service—and this volunteer deployment exemplified all three. Through their efforts at the race, alumni members connected with each other, with runners and with the larger Calgary community. Their early-morning arrival, cheerful greetings and readiness to handle weather, logistics and the ebbs of race-day demand reflected the commitment of brothers and sisters to meaningful civic engagement. Impact and Reflection By serving in Station Aid 1, the APO AA Calgary members helped ensure that participants in the 8 km, half-marathon and kids’ race had consistent on-route support. With aid stations placed every 3 km for the half-marathon and every 4 km for the 8 km race, the volunteer role was critical to the smooth flow of the event. One brother reflected: “It’s more than passing out water—it’s about being part of something that uplifts community, supports first-responders and shows what we can do when we serve together.” Looking Ahead With the success of this year’s Classic, APO AA Calgary members are already considering how to strengthen their involvement in future Calgary-area community events. The 2025 race reinforced the value of partnering with major civic events and showcased how alumni service can bolster community health, fun and fitness while honoring the tradition of first responders.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING

Michelle Thiessen, Founder - APO Calgary AA
As one of the Founders of the Alpha Phi Omega Alumni Association of Calgary, I am deeply proud of how far we’ve come since our humble beginnings. What started as a vision to unite APO alumni in Calgary has grown into a thriving community that truly lives out the values of Leadership, Friendship, and Service. Through the years, I’ve witnessed the incredible dedication and camaraderie of our members — always ready to serve, to lead, and to uplift one another. The Association has become more than just a network of brothers and sisters; it’s a family that continues to make a positive impact in our local community while keeping the APO brotherhood and sisterhood alive beyond our collegiate years. Seeing our shared passion for service and brotherhood continue to flourish here in Calgary is one of my proudest achievements. I am honored to be part of this continuing journey of “Becoming a Leader, Being a Friend, and Being of Service.”

Anton Rebong, PRO - APO Calgary AA
Serving as the Public Relations Officer for APO Calgary AA has been a truly rewarding experience. It allowed me to combine my passion for communication with the core principles of APO: Leadership, Friendship, and Service. By promoting our initiatives, I've had the chance to witness firsthand the positive impact our brotherhood makes in the Calgary community, and it has strengthened my belief in our mission.

Guiller Gonzales, President - APO Calgary AA
As President of the APO Calgary AA, my focus was on strengthening our alumni community and expanding our impact. It has been a humbling and inspiring experience to lead a group so dedicated to the principles of Leadership, Friendship, and Service. Together, we not only organized successful service projects, like our annual Adopt-a-Highway cleanup, but also fostered a closer-knit brotherhood that will continue to serve Calgary for years to come. I'm immensely proud of our collective achievements and the path we've set for future leaders.
